HIP Consult is an independent management consulting firm based in Washington, DC with expertise in emerging markets telecommunications. We offer strategic, commercial and operational services to companies, international agencies, and governments worldwide.
We are looking for bright, ambitious and qualified GIS Interns to contribute to the development and maintenance of our growing geospatial database of fiber optic and other network infrastructure across Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and Asia. As an up-and- coming, fresh company, HIP Consult provides a challenging, hands-on opportunity in GIS for a self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment and works well in a team.
Job Description
The GIS Intern will work with other members of our data team to expand and update HIP Consult’s extensive databases of fiber optic cables and other ICT infrastructure. Through this internship, you will learn how to use serval types of open-source GIS and web-mapping software and broaden your perspective on international development issues by working directly with consultants in the emerging markets field. This position requires the ability to multitask and troubleshoot GIS processes, and a readiness to learn new skills.
Responsibilities
Use open-source GIS software to create infrastructure datasets
Aggregate and download geospatial data from online sources
Analyze and geo-process geospatial data
Use topological editing methods to clean and standardize data
Geotag with metadata
Conduct research to identify and validate locations of critical broadband infrastructure in countries across Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and Asia
Qualifications
Required
Strong academic record in Geography, GIS, International Affairs, International Development, and/or other relevant field
1+ year of experience with GIS desktop software (QGIS preferred)
Enthusiastic, motivated team player who is also an independent thinker
Diligent, thorough, and efficient researcher
Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
Close attention to detail with a critical degree of accuracy regarding data entry and
analysis
Ability to adapt quickly to new challenges
Proficient in Microsoft Office: Word, PowerPoint and Excel
Interest in international development, particularly technology and connectivity in
emerging and developing markets
Preferred
Experience with spatial querying SQL, PostGIS, PgAdmin
Experience working with and manipulating large datasets
Professional experience in GIS
Academic or professional experience in business analytics
Reading and/or speaking proficiency in Spanish, French, Russian, Arabic, or
Portuguese
Details
This position is available beginning Fall of 2019. Interns would work approximately 20-32 hours per week. GIS interns will be permitted a flexible schedule upon approval and paid on an hourly basis.
